Podcast

Welcome to The Evolved Caveman — the show for men who did everything they were told to do, got most of it, and still feel like something’s missing.

I’m Dr. John Schinnerer. I’m a coach with a Ph.D. in educational psychology from UC Berkeley, I consulted on Pixar’s Inside Out, and I’ve spent 30 years helping men get better at the part nobody trained them for: their inner world. Not louder. Not harder. Better.

Every week I sit down with researchers, therapists, veterans, founders, and the occasional guy who blew up his life and rebuilt it — and we get into what actually works.

What We Get Into

No fluff, no chest-beating, no “just be vulnerable, bro.” Practical tools, grounded in research, delivered in plain English:

  • Stress and burnout — why successful men feel wired and flat at the same time
  • Anger and irritability — what’s actually underneath the short fuse
  • Relationships — the anxious-avoidant trap, repetitive arguments, and how to fight well
  • Meaning and midlife — the “is this it?” question, and what to do with it
  • Shame and self-worth — the quiet engine behind most of the above
  • Grief and loss — including my own, losing my son
  • Fatherhood, friendship, and the epidemic of male loneliness
  • Sex, desire, and the conversations most couples avoid

Who This Is For

Men in their 30s, 40s and 50s who are competent almost everywhere else. You can run a team, close a deal, and stay calm in a crisis — but you go quiet when your wife says you seem distant, and you’re not sure why a small comment can ruin your whole evening.

You don’t need fixing. You need better information about what’s happening inside you, and something to do with it.
